World Asthma Day – YogaBugs Helpful Tips!

Today, Tuesday 2nd of May, is World Asthma Day. First Aid for Life report that approximately 5.4 million people are currently receiving treatment for Asthma, with 10% of all children suffering from Asthma.

For young children suffering from Asthma, sport and physical activity can be very difficult and this can make some children lose confidence as they may not have opportunities to play with friends or be ‘successful’ at sport.

YogaBugs provide a great form of physical activity for children with asthma and the use of breathing and relaxation techniques can help manage their condition. By performing a non-competitive sport, children can work and develop at their own pace, allowing them to boost their confidence levels and reduce anxiety or stress. This gives them a positive experience of sport and physical activity, making them more likely to participate in the future.

Through the use of different yoga poses and breathing techniques, children focus their breathing by taking deep breaths in through the nose and out through the mouth to increase their lung capacity. By increasing lung capacity, children’s general wellbeing improves and breathing issues such as asthma are controlled.

YogaBugs recommends some of the following poses to help with breathing issues such as asthma. The poses; butterfly, fish and bridge all open up the chest area increasing lung capacity and managing asthma problems whilst also decreasing anxiety.

Fish – Start on your back, bringing hands towards your tummy and bending elbows so head is lifted off the floor and chest is pointed upwards.

Bridge – Sitting down, place hands behind yourself with fingers pointing forward. Press down into your hands and feet, lifting bottom off the floor and tummy and chest towards the ceiling.

Butterfly – Sit on your bottom, bend your knees together and bring your feet together to touch each other.

The Bugs Group Easter Holiday Camps Review!

Over the two week Easter holidays, the Bugs Group ran several holiday camps for children aged 4-12 across Birmingham and Solihull. The camps, which run during all school holidays, again proved to be very popular with the kids having lots of fun and making lots of new friends!

Our FootieBugs camp ran at Solihull Sixth Form, B91 3WR. Children enjoyed specially themed days at the camp, including Wacky Wednesday and Flag Friday! As well as the usual fun and engaging football based games that work on core skills, children also enjoyed a special Football Easter Egg hunt on the first Wednesday of the camp! The kids then participated in two competition days, where they were awarded medals and certificates!

Also running at the Solihull Sixth Form was our DanceBugs holiday camp. At the camp, children used their imaginations to make creative movements based on different styles of dance. By exploring different styles, ranging from jazz to ballet to freestyle, children were able to combine all moves into a fantastic performance at the end of the camp, which they had produced themselves. To see the performance click here.

Our MultiBugs holiday camp ran at Four Dwellings Academy in Harborne, where kids enjoyed a huge variety of different sports and activities. Children played over 30 different sports and games, meaning they played their favourite sports but also had the chance to try out new ones that they may not have previously had the chance to try before! On competition day at the end of both weeks, the kids at the holiday camp showcased the skills they had learnt across the range of sports and all won medals and trophies!

Finally, our Dorridge holiday camp ran at Dorridge Primary School exclusively for pupils at the school. The Dorridge camp combined Football, Dance and Multi Sports into a fun packed two weeks where children all enjoyed the large mix of activities! Click here to view a video of a previous Dorridge holiday camp.

We are already looking forward to running our camps again during the May half term and Earlybird booking is available now! The MultiSports camp will again be running in Harborne and as usual Dorridge camp remains at the school, however there is a change of venue for the FootieBugs and DanceBugs camp, which is now at Light Hall School in Solihull, B90 2PZ. Unhappy and Inactive Children During Half-Terms!

The Telegraph have recently reported that children are at their unhappiest during school half terms, most notably during the Easter break. A study from the University of Essex discovered that children’s activity levels also dramatically drop, in some cases stopping altogether as they are spending less time with friends.

The findings of the study also showed that children were spending more time in front of computer screens or on mobile phones during holiday periods, therefore becoming more inactive and unhappy.

Besides preventing obvious health risks such as obesity and diabetes, children that are physically active are also more likely to happier than those who remain inactive according to Public Health England.

At the Bugs Group, we believe all children should be active and healthy especially during school half term breaks! That’s why we run a variety of different holiday camps for children in Harborne, Birmingham and Solihull.

We offer FootieBugs, DanceBugs and MultiBugs holiday camps, where children will play and participate in fun and exciting activities based around Football, Dance and Multi-Sports respectively.

All of our holiday camps are designed to keep children active over the holidays whilst making new friends, learning new skills and improving their self-confidence and therefore their overall happiness, meaning unhappy inactive children during half-terms are a thing of the past!

Prince Harry – Increasing Awareness of Mental Health Issues

Prince Harry has recently spoken about the difficulties he faced regarding his emotional and mental well-being in dealing with the death of his mother at such a young age.

In his interview with ‘The Telegraph’, Prince Harry discusses how he was left close to a breakdown on a number of occasions and also suffered from anxiety. Through sharing his own story and discussing the problems he has faced, he is hoping to encourage awareness of mental health issues, including in young children.

Prince Harry is working alongside his brother, the Duke of Cambridge, for a mental health charity CALM. The BBC reported that Prince William also believes that a ‘stiff upper lip’ could be holding people back from discussing and expressing their feelings, thus potentially endangering their mental health. He further went on to discuss how he would want his own children to be able to talk about their feelings, something that Prince Harry has admitted he was unable to do.

Children’s mental health is becoming an ever-growing issue, with the Mental Health Organisation reporting that 1 in 10 children are affected by mental health problems. Good physical health and regular exercise is important to developing mental health, as well as practicing mindfulness.

YogaBugs combines Yoga inspired moves with breathing and relaxation techniques to improve children’s emotional well being, helping them to deal with anxiety and stress and building self confidence levels. Through practising this at a young age, children develop good mental health and resilience to cope with any potential issues later in life.

YogaBugs run a range of programmes in both schools and nurseries, as well as local Yoga Classes.

“The biggest challenge I faced when I joined the company was adjusting from such a small part time job to such a busy, large working environment”

“The Bugs Group is a fun and loving company, I have always wanted to work with children, and the and at the Bugs Group, children are at the heart of everything we do.”
