On Saturday 15th February, a group of avid adventurers enjoyed a bespoke SEN YogaBugs taster session at Solihull College.
The children went on an amazing adventure; they packed their expedition bags, sailed across the ocean and trekked through the jungle. Then they moved around like the animals that they discovered – snakes, lions, elephants and monkeys to name just a few! Afterwards they sailed back across the ocean and ended their session with practising their breathing techniques.
Everybody got involved and there were lots of smiles at the end of the session, with many of the children eager for their next adventure!
Our fully accessible venue and inclusion-trained staff provided an accepting and flexible environment for the children to reach get involved and their potential. Each child was accompanied by a parent or Personal Assistant offering a unique opportunity for them both to enjoy the session and the benefits of yoga. It was also an opportunity for the children to make friends with other participants and grow their social circle and sense of community.
Parents/carers reported noting the holistic benefits that yoga can offer for their child: increased concentration, greater spatial understanding and a growth in confidence. In addition, yoga helps develop low muscle tone, increases flexibility and leads to greater endurance.
Our classes offer supported yoga-based activities for children with special needs, learning difficulties and disabilities. Using our unique story-based approach, children get the benefits of exercise through engaging with a fun adventure. Current figures indicate that only 2 in 10 disabled people describe themselves as active, despite wanting to exercise; at The Bugs Group we are passionate about changing this. We believe that all children, regardless of disability, are entitled to safe, enjoyable and challenging sports activities led by qualified, specially trained coaches.
We are looking forward to many more SEN yoga sessions!
